Six Elements of Biophilic Design
“Biophilic” in the landscape design ideas figuratively to integrate elements of nature within the built environment. Biophilic which is also means the love of life is used to allow for a direct encounter with nature and nature-inspired elements into a landscape design environment that bring out wellness while produce enhanced experiences through the interaction with nature.
Six elements and attributes of biophilic design based on Dr. Stephen R Kellert (2008), from an environmental design website written by Valerie C. are as follows;
- Environmental Features
Bring characteristics of nature into built environment based on the color, water, air, sunlight, plants, animals and natural materials.
- Natural Shapes & Forms
Simulation of natural features into biomorphic art, architecture and landscape design by using botanical, animal and shell motifs.
- Natural Patterns & Processes
Variation of sensory experiences into a space with time, change and transitions; complimentary contrasts, the play between balance and tension; rhythm, ratios and use of scale.
- Light & Space
Attractive lights foe safety and security as well as visual impact by shapes, harmonious, jarring, light and dark effects.
- Place-Based Relationships
Significance of places that tied to historic, cultural, geographic or ecological relations can be evoked within built environment.
- Evolved Human-Nature Relationships
A complex interaction between human and nature can be used in design to evoke reminders such as prospect and refuge; order and complexity; curiosity and enticement; mastery and control; affection and attachment; security and protection; exploration and discovery; information and cognition as well as fear and awe.
The dominant concepts of mimic-nature has emphasized the interconnecting lines between human and natural landscape as expresses in our evolutionary history through the time spent with nature is proved to have a positive psychological and physiological effects. This concept also shows on how the biophilic design is concerned with the relationship of the lore culture and preservation of nature into built environment to strengthen human-nature connection.
